RUGYENDO DEO ARINAITWE

Rugyendo has worked for over 18 years as a journalist and media entrepreneur in Uganda. He has consistently worked to spur young entrepreneurship, leadership and social transformation in the country for which he has won numerous awards.

A Desmond Tutu leadership program Fellow, and a Crans Montana Forum ‘New Leader of Tomorrow,’ Rugyendo has set out on a long journey to nurture Uganda’s next generation of scientists, entrepreneurs and innovators through promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) concepts among school going children in Uganda aged between 4 and 15.

In 2012, Rugyendo was awarded the prestigious Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Fellowship of the African Leadership Institute which is jointly run by University of Stellenboch in South Africa and University of Oxford in UK. In 2013, Rugyendo was awarded another prestigious Fellowship- The Crans Montana Forum, a network of world political, social and business leaders committed to a more balanced and humane world. He picked his award in Geneva in 2015.

Rugyendo says:

As Exceed Institute Of Occupational Safety and Health we draw our inspiration from the strong tie between poor health and safety to the lack of Occupational Safety and Health awareness and education. The inadequate knowledge, skills and the failure to adhere to OSH requirements means talent loss, having higher rate of workplace accidents, injuries, deaths and the hidden costs resulting into increased expenditure on medical and legal services and eventually reduced revenue to the individual companies and organisations this greatly affects the economic and social status of Uganda.

As EIOSH we are committed to solving the problem of the limited access to Occupational health and safety education, information, skills and innovations and thus identifies this problem as a national core problem. From this point on, our main purpose will be to increase access to quality an sustainable occupational health and safety education, research, training and sensitisation.

In this spirit, our goal is to produce graduates who have discipline-specific expertise and who are also known for their values and their ability to create, innovate, initiate and lead. Uganda is in the midst of a journey towards a middle-income status. No country in the word has reached this stage without emphasis on Safety and Health. For this to happen in Uganda, we need to foster an OSH oriented generation that will embrace sustainability and see technology and related applied as a future not which they might just benefit from but which they can help create.

If today’s graduates are equipped with the right skills, if they have the right networks, if they have the right attitude, Uganda’s youth unemployment crisis that stands at 83% will go down in two decades from now. We have to make sure we equip every student in Uganda and the region with OSH skills to be relevant in future, a future that is dotted with the digital revolution requiring skills in science and technology.
